Have a good time! Yes, we had a good time!

Berlin, August 25, 2009: The athletes of the 2009 Athletics World Championships were hosted for two weeks in the official team hotel, Hotel Berlin in Berlin. Roughly 1,200 athletes from over 80 nations stayed at the renowned Hotel at Lützowplatz, among them the German team as well as the double world record sprinter Usain Bolt (9.58/19.19).

The deal for this world event had been the first contract which was signed after Pandox AB had bought the Hotel back in June 2006. Cornelia and her team were looking forward to the challenges ahead and offered the athletes outstanding, tailor made 24hrs service. On a daily basis 4,200 meals were produced and served, 600 kg fruit (of which 3,000 bananas alone) and 80 kg grapes. Several thousand litres of water were drunk, roughly 50,000 bath towels and hand towels were used, 800 litres of soap and 5,000 rolls of toilet paper were consumed.

“The hotel at Lützowplatz was transformed into an ‘all-inclusive’ house”, said Managing Director Cornelia Kausch. The Lützowplatz itself was transformed into a sports arena for stretching, warm-up & loosening-up exercises as well as preparation ground for a run in the Berlin Tiergarten Park.

The logistics during the World Championships resembled a Herculean task.

Over 100 m³ of rubbish accumulated through the athletes. Allocation of rooms – with consideration of bed sizes, uncomplicated arrival and departure, facilities such as a “quiet/peaceful room”, three physiotherapy rooms with over 40 massage couches and also prayer, relaxation and anti doping rooms – had to be taken into consideration. In months of detailed work the hotel including all departments prepared for this “once in a lifetime” experience.

“Our goal was that our athletes – the guests of Hotel Berlin, Berlin – were awarded with a higher number of medals than our competitive Hotel. This was the spirit amongst all associates and we achieved this top performance”. Our athletes won a total of 70 medals (24 Gold, 26 Silver and 20 Bronze) – with Jamaica and Germany right up front – versus our competitor the Estrel Hotel Berlin with 66 medals (23 Gold, 20 Silver and 23 Bronze).

The most beautiful compliment came from Jennifer Oeser – silver medal winner of the Heptathlon: “Thank you very much for an outstanding stay in your hotel! It was an unforgettable time here in Berlin.”

Indeed, it was an exciting time for all athletes, organisers and naturally for the team here at Hotel Berlin, Berlin.

Incredible visions: having guests who are pampered. Experience the rebirth of a unique hotel!
